Abstract
The article discusses the character of Horatio in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, with particular focus given to the author's assertion that he is based on the ancient Roman poet Horace. Horatio's role in the play as a witness and preserver of memory is examined, and the common theme of literary immortality in the work of Shakespeare and Horace is explored.
